“A time's true colors fade with the passing of those who moved through it. Thus one of the oldest uses of history, oral and written, is its memorial function, the capacity to keep long-gone times vivid, recovering for those present a little of the life that might otherwise be lost.”
Tom Clark (born 1941), poet and critic

workshop: Write Your Memoir

Write Your Memoir: An Overview of the Process

Part lecture, part individual exercises, and part interactive work in groups, participants will receive a step-by-step overview of the process of creating a memoir, from story idea to print. They will take home a folder filled with notes on their own stories and valuable resource handouts which will enable them to continue working on their memoir.

This introductory workshop is available in several formats:

  • Overview seminar: a one-time, two-hour session
  • Memoir Planning: 2 sessions with Activity Book
  • Audio Memories: 3 sessions with Memory Book and audio CD

Topics

We all have stories to tell, but which ones do others want to hear? How should you get organized? What are the options for publishing? This workshop explores different paths to creating a memoir. Participants will learn how to:

  • Define the audience and goals for their memoir
  • Generate ideas for stories to include
  • Decide upon the type of memoirs and methods of organization best suited to their stories
  • Add details to tell stories more vividly
  • Use photos and illustrations to enhance the memoir
  • Revise draft manuscripts
  • Determine whether commercial or self-publishing fits their goals
